Grant opportunities for MVI research
NWO endorses the importance of interdisciplinary research that maps out the social aspects of (technological) innovations at an early stage. Therefore, there are plenty of opportunities for MVI research within NWO. For calls within the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC) and the Dutch Research Agenda (NWA), matchmaking meetings are organised to bring alpha, beta and gamma researchers together and to stimulate interdisciplinary cooperation from the very start. The latest information about the different calls for proposals is always available on the NWO website.
Please find an overview of the calls within the KIC and NWA that are open for applications below:
Towards a practical Safe-by-Design approach for chemical products and processes – NWA
Safe-by-Design is an iterative, interactive, interdisciplinary design process in which health and safety are framed as central values from an early stage of development and throughout the design process, so that the resulting products and processes are safer for people and the environment. Mutual learning is central to this programme: The early consideration of health and environmental effects not only requires fundamental chemical and toxicological knowledge, but also practical knowledge of production processes, the future use of the substances and processes and their effects during the life cycle. The intended impact of this research program goes beyond just joint learning between consortium partners – it is also about sharing what has been learned in such a way that other developers and researchers are helped along the way.
The deadline for submitting a full proposal is 18 January 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET. There are no pre-proposals in this call.
The societal impact of quantum technology – NWA
The program aims to provide insights into the meaning, opportunities and threats of quantum technology for society. What impact will quantum computing, sensing and communication have? The development of quantum technology has a technological and potentially major economic and social impact. It is important to gain insight into this possible impact and what the pros and cons of these expectations are.
The deadline for submitting a full proposal is 12 January 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET. There are no pre-proposals in this call.
Zero-emission and Circular Shipping – KIC
The goal of this call for proposals is to build a knowledge foundation to advance the transition to zero-emission and circular shipping. The focus is on the use of an electric and/or hybrid powertrain in shipping. Research deals with the optimisation of the required energy systems, in particular batteries and fuel cells. This includes the entire chain; from the required raw materials, design, production to the final recycling of used materials in the powertrain.
The deadline for submitting pre-proposals is 18 January 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET.
Transition to circular and emission-free building industry – KIC
The building sector faces considerable challenges in the coming decades. In 2050, the built environment must not only be emission-free, but also circular. This call focuses on the question as to how innovations to make the building sector (in various areas) circular and emission-free can be (further) developed and implemented for renovation projects. The aim is to facilitate an acceleration in realising the ambitions for a sustainable transition to a circular and emission-free building sector. The call focuses on an integral coherency between changes that are necessary at the sector level and for renovation projects.
The deadline for submitting pre-proposals is 20 January 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET.
Climate-robust water systems on landscape scale – KIC
This programme invites for research into a resilient and climate-robust design of the Dutch water system and a water-robust landscape for the next decades. Research should look into integrated solutions for problems concerning too much, too little, too saline, or too polluted water. Interactions between the water system, spatial planning and the various functions of freshwater and the landscape must be taken into account. There should be attention for public support, action perspectives and/or behavioural changes required for system changes.
The deadline for submitting pre-proposals is 22 March 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET.
Microbiome: Healthy from soil to gut and back – KIC
In the soil and water, on plants and guts of animals and humans numerous micro-organisms are active, together called the microbiome. The microbiome performs important functions, such as the protection of plants, animals and humans against pathogens, making nutrients available and the digestion of food. Scientifically, major breakthroughs can be expected from the research into the functioning of the microbiome. New research is needed to understand the complete picture of the micro-organisms and their functions in the soil, agriculture and horticulture including the transmission between them, and to apply this knowledge in sustainable solutions. It is not evident that such applications will be automatically accepted by farmers and consumers. It therefore is important that researchers work together in an interdisciplinary manner from an early stage onward, in order to achieve appliances in this research field.
The deadline for submitting pre-proposals is 24 March 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET.
Access to care in the living environment – KIC
The aim of this call is to contribute to the health and self-reliance of citizens. To facilitate and maintain this, research needs to be carried out aimed at the further development, application and effective use of technology in the own living environment that contributes to a healthy lifestyle and to transferring care and support to the own living environment.
The deadline for submitting pre-proposals is 24 March 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET.
Dutch Research Agenda - Research along Routes by Consortia 2022 (NWA-ORC 2022) – NWA
The aim of the NWA-ORC 2022 call for proposals is to encourage research that is set up and carried out by interdisciplinary consortia that include representatives from the full breadth of the knowledge chain as well as relevant societal (public and/or private) partners, including citizens. The research will address so called wicked problems, focused on the portfolio of 25 routes and the 140 corresponding cluster questions in the NWA. The starting point for this is the Portfolio for Research and Innovation.
The deadline for online submission of an initiative is on 1 February 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET.
Getting a grip on juvenile crime - involvement of adolescents in serious and organised crime – NWA
Preventing adolescents from becoming involved serious and organised forms of crime and developing a criminal career requires an understanding of the background of these individuals, entry mechanisms and the effectiveness of interventions that play a role in this process. The programme ‘Getting a grip on juvenile crime' has a threefold objective:
- To increase the insight into the backgrounds and mechanisms that play a role in adolescents becoming involved in serious and organised crime;
- To increase the possibilities of early detection on the basis of the obtained insights;
- To make an inventory of existing interventions and develop effective interventions based on knowledge and insights into entry mechanisms.
The deadline for submitting full proposals is 20 January 2022, before 14:00 CET. There are no pre-proposals in this call.
Polair Tourism - Research Programme on Assessment of Impacts and Responses – NWA
Tourism in Antarctica has been expanding in intensity, diversity and geographical range. PT-REPAIR stimulates research that will enhance our knowledge of polar tourism’s (cumulative) impacts in Antarctica and the influence of governance of Antarctic tourism. This serves to support of (inter)national policymaking to protect the Antarctic Treaty and Netherlands Polar Strategy values.
The deadline for submitting full proposals is 24 March 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET. There are no pre-proposals in this call.
Urban Bridges and Quay Walls – Urbiquay – NWA
For an effective and sustainable approach, enjoying the broadest possible societal support, municipalities need information about technical and process innovations and an understanding of the values to be taken into account when devising policy and measures for the renovation and repair of bridges and quay walls. At the same time, there are also many possibilities and opportunities for innovation and connection with other urban tasks. For example, when renovating and replacing bridges and quay walls, factors such as climate adaptation, circularity, energy, transport and ecology can be taken into account at the same time. This Call for proposals invites knowledge institutions and societal parties to form consortia for the development of scientific and practice-oriented research proposals aimed at “sustainable solutions for the repair, renovation and management of bridges and quay walls in a complex urban context”. The consortia are required to work in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary manner and should have a knowledge-chain-wide composition. Knowledge-chain-wide means that proposals connect fundamental, applied and practice-oriented research and that connection is sought with the knowledge needs of societal parties.
The deadline for submitting full proposals is 18 January 2022, before 14:00 hrs CET. There are no pre-proposals in this call.
